Influence of micro- and nano-structures on the hydrophobicity of the surface of alumina modified with fluoroalkylsilane

AbstractThe wettability of solid surfaces, governed by both the chemical composition and the geometrical microstructure of the surface, is a very important property. It is reported that the hydrophobicity of a surface can be enhanced by the nano-structures or micro-structures because air that is trapped between the droplet and the solid surface minimizes the contact area. However, few studies involving the relationship between the hydrophobicity of a surface and the micro- and nano-structures have been reported. Herein, we prepared some micro- and nano-structures with a simple method, the influence of the structures on the hydrophobicity of the surface was given. Some micro- and nano-structures were constructed by etching the porous alumina membrane with NaOH solution. Then, the surfaces of smooth alumina, porous alumina membrane and the micro-and nanostructures were modified with fluoroalkylsilane(FAS-17). The wettability of the modified surfaces were studied by contact angle method and their morphology were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The contact angle for water of the micro-and nanostructured surface(149degrees+/-2degrees) was much higher than that of the nano-structured surface (141degrees+/-2degrees) and the smooth surface(101degrees+/-1degrees). It was indicated that the micro-and nano-structure surfaces showed a more excellent property in improving the hydrophobicity than that of the other structured surfaces. The result of XPS analysis was also reported.
