AbstractThe adsorption of sodium 4-ethyl naphthalene-l-sulfon ate has been studied by cyclic voltammetry and in situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STNI). Electrochemical STM imaging reveals an ordered adlayer with a (4 x 4) structure on Cu(1 1 1) in 0.1 M HClO4 in which the surfactant molecules are oriented parallel to the surface. The structural details of each molecule are well discerned. A structural model is proposed for the molecular arrangement. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
