Effects of hydrogen on catalytic system for vapor-phase methanol carbonylation

AbstractIn recent years, many efforts have been offered to develop novel catalysts for vapor-phase methanol carbonyaltion. As reported, porous carbon materials are relatively the most suitable supports, but the noticeable problem is the poor stability of the catalysts. In this work, the experiments were designed to explore the affecting parameter, hydrogen content, on the catalyst stability. Nickel supported on carbonized poly(vinylidene chloride) beads, which are a kind of novel and excellent porous carbon, was used as a catalyst for vapor-phase methanol carbonylation under different feed gas conditions, such as CO, 5CO-1H(2) and 1.5CO-1H(2). The results of catalytic carbonylation indicated that the activity and stability of the catalyst have dependence on the hydrogen concentration in feed gas, further, the perturbation of hydrogen to the catalyst system was detected. The effects of hydrogen were discussed from three aspects: ( 1) effect of hydrogen on mass transport over nickel surface; (2) effect of hydrogen on the catalyst stability; (3) adjunctive reactions aroused by hydrogen. It was concluded that the proper content of hydrogen could promote the activity and stability of the catalyst.
