Epitaxial- and transcrystallization of multilayer iPP/HDPE film by a partial heating process

AbstractCrystallization of multilayered films of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) was observed by wide-angle and small-angle X-ray scattering measurements. The original texture of iPP/HDPE was alternatively stacked thin iPP and PE layers, each consisting of crystalline lamellae with a sharp c-axis orientation. During partial heating in between the melting temperatures of PE and PP (140 to 155 C), PE was melted such that it was without any orientation, while PP maintained the c-axis orientation. On a successive process of cooling, PE was crystallized by heteroepitaxy onto the c-axis-oriented iPP surface. The resulting PE lamellae were inclined 54degrees from the c-axis of PP, which is the average angle due to (010) epitaxy (PE bc-plane is in contact with the PP(010) plane with the PE c-axis inclined 50degrees) and (110) epitaxy (PE bc-plane is in contact with the PP(110) plane with the PE c-axis inclined 57degrees). In the multilayered films, additional mechanisms due to transcrystallization of PE were observed.
