AbstractSulfonate derivatives of chiral 1,1'-binaphthol were used as chiral anionic surfactants in asymmetric aldol-type reaction in water to give aldol adducts with moderate to good diastereo- and enantioselectivities; Ga(OTf)(3) and Cu(OTf)(2) were better than Sc(OTf)(3) as Lewis acid catalysts.
