AbstractWe report narrow blue electroluminescence (EL) from double-layer diodes using a fluorene-based copolymer as an emitting layer. The copolymer consisting of fluorene and quinoline units, poly{[9,9-bis(2-ethylhexyl)fluorene-2.7-ylene]-alt-[6,6'-p-phenylene-2,2'-bis(4-phenylquinoline)]} (PFQ) forms aggregate easily, leading to a red emission both in its photoluminescence and electroltiminescence spectra. Through blending PFQ with poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK), the red emission contributed from the aggregate of PFQ was suppressed and a narrow blue emission obtained from a double-layer diode with a structure of indium-tin oxide (ITO)/PVK:PFQ/tris(8-hydroxyquinolinato)aluminum (Alq(3))/aluminum (Al). The EL reaches a brightness and external quantum efficiency of 12 muW and 0.082%. respectively. and the full width at half maximum changed from 120 nun to 60 nm.
