AbstractPolyaniline (PANI) and polypyrrole (PPy) nanotubes with average diameter of 50similar to800nm and conductivity of 10(-2)similar to40 S/cm were synthesized through a self-assembly process in the presence of organic sulfonic acid or inorganic acid as the dopant. Especially, mutil-functional PANI nanotubes can be synthesized by the same method in the presence of Fe3O4 or TiO2 nanoparticles. It was found that the polymer and dopant structure, dopant concentration and synthesis conditions affect the formation yield, morphology and size as well as physical properties of the nanotubes. The micelles formed by dopant and monomer/dopant salt or supra-cluster acting as templates were proposed to interpret the formation of the nanotubes. However, template substance is related to monomer and dopant structure as well as synthesis conditions.
