AbstractThe effect of magnetic field (MF) on the polymerization of methyl methacrylate and styrene initiated with benzoyl peroxide in supercritical (SC)CO2 was studied. The polymerization yields and the molecular weight of poly(methyl methacrylate) increased when a MF was employed. However, the MF did not noticeably affect the polymerization in cyclohexane. This unusual phenomenon may result from the special swelling power of SC CO2 for the polymers and the larger diffusivity of SC CO2 than the liquid solvent.
