AbstractSelf-assembled monolayer of functional molecule 3, 4, 9, 10-perylene tetracarboxylic acid (PTA) was prepared on hydroxylated indium tin oxide (ITO) surfaces via an ester-bond linkage. Contact angle measurements, UV-visible spectra and atomic force microscopy (AFM) characterization showed that densely-packed, well-ordered structures are formed in the self-assembled PTA monolayers. Photoelectrochemical studies were carried out in KCl aqueous solution containing triethanolamine as an electron sacrificer using the PTA monolayer modified ITO as working electrode. An anodic photoelectrochemical response can be observed upon illumination. The agreement of the action spectrum with absorption spectrum of the PTA modified ITO demonstrates that the PTA dye-aggregate within the SAM is responsible for the photocurrent generation.
