Improving in performance of the large-scale zinc-polyaniline secondary battery

AbstractA large scale rechargeable battery of 2 Zn/ZnCl2, NH4Cl/polyaniline/carbon in which the polyaniline cathode has an apparent area of 60 cm and a thickness of 1.5 cm is described The electrolyte consists of 2.5 mol.dm(-3) ZnCl2 and 3 mol.dm(-3) NH4Cl and triton x-100. The latter is employed to inhibit zinc dendrite growth during charging and discharging processes. The experiment result shows that the solution containing triton x- 100 over 1% can effectively inhibit zinc dendrite growth. The battery is charged and discharged at a constant current of 202 mA (3.3 mA.cm(-2)). The coulomb e ciency for the char ng and discharging processes is over 95% except the first cycle and the energy density of polyaniline is 63 Ah.kg(-1) at constant current 1.7 mA.cm(-2), but both of them decrease slowly with increasing cycles. The energy density of polyaniline in the above solution with pH 4.90 is slightly higher than that at pH 4.40. This is caused by the buffer capacity of the solution. The higher pH value is advantageous to. inhibit the corrosion of the zinc electrode.
