AbstractCloser contact of dendrons adsorbed on a graphite structure may be induced by hydrogen bonding between carboxylic acid groups, as revealed by STM. Ester groups prevent the formation of hydrogen bonds to result in a less close packing of dendrons in such assemblies (see picture).
