In situ STM of phenolic compounds on Cu(111) in solution

AbstractThe adsorption of phenol, 2-naphthol and catechol on well-defined Cu(111) surface has been investigated by using in situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and electrochemical method in aqueous HClO4 solution. All the molecules were found to form highly ordered adlayers. High-resolution STM images revealed the molecular orientation and packing arrangement in the ordered adlayers. The STM images of phenol and catechol molecules appeared as characteristic triangular shapes in (3 x 3) structure as that of benzene molecules. But the STM image of 2-naphthol molecules in a (3 x 4) structure was slightly different from that of naphthalene and derivatives reported previously. Such difference can be attributed to the introduction of hydroxyl group at the C-2-position. Three structural models are also proposed for the three adlayers. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V.
