Solution behavior of fluorocarbon-modified polyacrylamide copolymers

AbstractThe properties of fluorocarbon-modified polyacrylamide aqueous solutions are investigated, including rheological behavior, intrinsic viscosity and their dependence on temperature and the addition of salts. It is found that hydrogen bond strength and hydrophobic association of the solutions are remarkably influenced by the content and chemical structure of the hydrophobic co-monomers. The viscosity reaches a minimum when molar content of the co-monomers is 0.14%, and all samples' viscosity increases with the addition of salts. With the increase in temperature, there exist two peaks corresponding to the minimum and maximum viscosity. All the experimental results could be explained by the competitive contribution to viscosity from hydrogen interaction and hydrophobic association in the solutions.
