Non-isothermal crystallization behavior of maleic anhydride graft polypropylene and its ionomers

AbstractThe non-isothermal behaviors for maleic anhydride graft polypropylene and its Na+,Mn2+,Ca2+ ionomers under different cooling rates have been studied by DSC. The. analysis of exothermic peaks has been done in terms of peak temperature (T-max), starting crystallization temperature (T-0), initial slope (S-i) and width of half-height (Delta w). Avrami equation and a combination of Avrami-Ozawa method were used to analyze the nonisothermal crystallization kinetics. All ionomers had higher rate of nucleation, characterized by the higher values of S-i, overall rate of crystallization, characterized by the higher values of (T-max - T-0), and narrower crystallite size distribution, characterized by the lower values of Delta w, than those of pure PP and PP-g-MAH. The plots of S-i versus. temperature (T-0 or T-max) are more accurate and valuable than the plots vs. cooling rate at evaluating the crystallization characteristic of samples. The fact that all samples had Avrami exponents in a range of 2.5 similar to 2.8 implied the mode of PP crystallization was not changed by varied cooling rates by the solid graft modification.
