AbstractSolvatochromic behavior of acetone in supercritical CO2 was investigated over a wide range of pressures from 75 to 240 bar and at 318.15 K using UV-Vis spectroscopy. Local density of CO2 about the solute was estimated from the solvatochromic shift of acetone based on the McRae-Bayliss dielectric continuum model. The most remarkable aggregation of CO2 about the solute occurs at the reduced density of 0.5 similar to 0.6. A sim pie clustering model was presented to estimate the excess solvent number about each solute molecule to the bulk region. In the near-critical region, the excess number of CO2 is larger than the cluster size at infinite dilution defined by Debenedetti, which may be attributed to the formation of solute-solute clusters.
