| Abstract | Core-shell structures of Fe-doped nanostructured TiO2@SiO2 were synthesized through the ammonium hydroxide catalyzed hydrolysis of tetraethylorthosiliane in isopropanol media containing presynthesized Fe3+-doped rutile TiO2 nanorods. Fe3+-doped titanium dioxide were prepared from aqueous titanium (III) chloride solution in the presence of powder Fe2O3 (0-30 wt% relative to TiCl3) using hydrothermal method. The structure of the powders was characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ICP-OES, and transmission electron microscopy. The experimental results showed that the core structure appeared to be composed of rutile titania nanocrystals. The optimum dopant content was about 5 wt%. The thickness of the amorphous SiO2 shell was about 2.5 nm. Ultraviolet-Vis reflection measurements revealed that the absorption of pure TiO2 was significantly blue-shifted upon the incorporation of Fe3+ into the TiO2 host. |
