AbstractA simultaneous separation of four metal ions of Cd(2+), Co(2+), Zn(2+), and Cu(2+) was developed by capillary electrophoresis by using HQ3 (Bis(2-pyridylmethyl)(8-pyridylmethyloxy-quinoline-2-methyl) amine) as chelating ligand. It has been demonstrated that HQ3 plays two important roles in the simultaneous separation by CE. The first role is to improve separation selectivity of Zn(2+), Cd(2+), Co(2+), and Cu(2+) by forming metal-HQ3 complexes. Another is to make the UV detection of metal ions possible with high UV sensitivity. The separation conditions have been optimized. The baseline separation of Zn(2+), Cd(2+), Co(2+), and Cu(2+) has been carried out by using running buffer of 60 mM acetate buffer and 2 mM cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) at pH 4.0. The separation behaviors including interference of other metal ions, effect of buffer pH, buffer concentration, CTAB concentration have been examined. The method has been validated and applied to determine metal ions in serum sample.
