AbstractThree-dimensionally ordered macroporous cross-linked polystyrene (3DOM CLPS) with pore size of 890 nm was prepared by sacrifice template method The hydrophilic spacer arm (triethylene glycol, TEG) was grafted to the 3DOM CLPS via nucleophilic substitution reaction The 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBZ) group was attached via TEG to framework of 3DOM CLPS The final product was characterized by FT-IR and element analysis In addition, the results of SEM showed that the ordered and interconnected macroporous structure is well preserved after functionalization The relative large pores of 3DOM CLPS allow introduction of longer polymer chains to the framework, and not to plug the channels The interconnected channels can accelerate the materials exchange Furthermore, the adsorption capacities and adsorption kinetics of the functionalized 3DOM CLPS were tested The adsorption capacities for Ag+ and Hg2+ were 0 78 and 0 39 mmol/g, respectively The results indicated that introduction of hydrophilic spacer arms between the 3DOM framework and heterocyclic functional groups improve the adsorption capacity The adsorptions kinetic at different temperatures were also investigated
