AbstractCarbon nanotubes are one-dimensional materials with hollow structures, the diameters of which are usually in the range of 1 nm to several tens of nanometers. Carbon nanotubes can be used as "nano containers" to encapsulate guest molecules in their interior nano space. Because of spatial confinement effect of carbon nanotube walls, the encapsulated materials exhibit 'Peculiar structures and properties. In this review, we introduce the methods for filling carbon nanotubes and discuss the structures, phase transitions, stabilities and vibrational properties of the encapsulated materials as well as chemical reactions inside carbon nanotubes. The future directions for the research in this field are also discussed.
