AbstractA new copper(II) complex of general formula Na-2(Cu3L4)center dot 2H(2)O center dot 2CH(3)OH (L = 5-phenyl pyrazole-3-carboxylic acid) has been newly obtained by the reaction of copper chloride with 5-phenyl pyrazole-3-carboxylic acid in methanol in the presence of NaOH at room temperature. X-ray diffraction analysis of the crystal structure reveals that the complex is a trinuclear crystal structure that consists of two sodium cations and an anion cluster. Two kinds of coordination modes were observed in the Cu center of the anion cluster; the Cu1 is coordinated to four nitrogen atoms from four 5-phenyl pyrazole-3-carboxylic acid ligands, forming a distorted tetrahedral (CuN4) geometry, while Cu2 is coordinated to two oxygen atoms and two nitrogen atoms of two 5-phenyl pyrazole-3-carboxylic acid, respectively, forming a slightly distorted square planar (CuN2O2) geometry. Cu and Cu are connected by four nitrogen of two different ligands, while Cu and Na are linked by carboxyl oxygen atom from the ligand. The Cu atoms and Na atoms are connected furthermore each other by carboxyl oxygen atom, forming a three-dimensional structure.
