Modeling the thermal conductivity of exfoliated polymer/clay nanocomposites

AbstractBased on the fact that the interfacial scattering of phonons dominates the heat transfer processes in the nanostructures and nanomaterials, a quite simple formula is presented to explain the thermal conductivity of the exfoliated polymer/clay nanocomposites. Our model shows that the thermal conductivity of the exfoliated polymer/clay nanocomposites decreases with increasing the clay volume fraction due to the large surface area of the exfoliated clay layers. Furthermore, the experimental results of the exfoliated polymer/clay nanocomposites recently reported in the literature are explained by using this model.
