Progress in superhydrophobic surfaces

AbstractSurface wetting behavior is of great importance in determining the application of various materials. Many physicochemical processes, such as adsorption, lubrication, adhesion, dispersion, friction and so forth are closely related with the wettability of materials. In the last decade, surfaces with ultra hydrophobicity have aroused much research interests owing to their potential application in self-cleaning coatings, microfluidics and biocompatible materials and so on. The recent progress in the study of superhydrophobic surface is summarized in three parts. In the first part the characterization and influences of wettability are briefly introduced; in the second part new development of superhydrophobic surfaces is summarized from both experimental and theoretical aspects; in the third part the prospect of the development in this field is proposed.
